Video speed slow down to 80%

The video speed feature is a useful idea.

You seem to have focused on making it faster for skimming thru' long courses, I suppose, which is great, however, I mainly work with language learners, and the ability to slow the video down slightly is also a great feature for them. At present you only offer the option of slowing down to half speed, which is too much and distorts the speech. After experimenting with various players I concluded the optimum slow down to be 80%  (slows down speech enough to give you an advantage without any noticable deterioration in quality or naturalness)

Thanks for all the great work and making this stuff available to all of us.

Hi WillB,

Thank you for the kind words and thanks a lot for contributing your ideas on how to make H5P better! We’re now working on something called the H5P supporter program allowing the H5P community to vote for and fund the top voted H5P features. Also there are developers in the community who every now and then works on a feature they find interesting or useful.

Hi WillB!

There's nothing that we can do for videos that are hosted on YouTube, but we could easily change this for other videos. Thanks for your suggestion!

Best,
Oliver

Hi Oliver,

To clarify, if we loaded a youtube video into H5P, does that mean that the slow down speed function in H5P won't work?  Are there any fixes for this?  I'm a language instructor as well, and would like to be able to reduce the speed of the new H5P video.  Youtube has the slow down function, but then I'd loose the interactive materials added with H5P.

Thank you,

Kim

Hi Kim,

You are correct if a video is hosted in Youtube the speed of the video cannot be controlled. However I believe it would be possible to tap into those settings but there needs to be changes/additions to the codes. I suggest that you post this in the feature request forum.  In order for your feature request to attract as much interest as possible make sure it follows the below guidelines:

  1. It is clear from every perspective how the feature will work. We recommend describing the feature with one or more user stories, for instance “As an author I want it to be possible to pick between different effects for the check answer animation so that the learners will see a variety of effects and also I can adapt the effects to my target audience(I’ll be using pink unicorns which works really well for both my target audience which are 4 year old girls and venture capitalists)”

  2. If the feature can be illustrated with images or videos it always helps

  3. Make it clear what content types this is relevant for, and or if this is a new content type

Make sure you post the feature in the Feature Request forum.

Hi Kim!

To clarify: YouTube has a function to set the playback rate, but you cannot set it arbitrarily. YouTube generates a list of possible playback rates for each video (not sure on what basis). H5P has to ask YouTube what playback rates are available and then offers those to choose from. It YouTube doesn't offer a playback rate of 0.8 (or 0.75 maybe), you cannot set it and you can't enforce it. Please see YouTube's API reference for details.

Best,
Oliver
