Time sequenced presentation

Hi,

I have not yet started creating content with H5P but would like to use it to create short presentations that are sequenced by a timeline, such that images, text etc appear at certain points in a voice over. At the moment I am using Captivate to create this type of content, but see significant possibilities for H5P in this regard.

I do not immediately see any existing tools to do this. A tool like the presentation tool would be appropriate I imageine, but with time sequencing functionality incorporated.

Any thoughts on this?

Hi perterk, I've moved this post to the 'feature requests' part of the forum. I think it's a great idea and it will definitely be a great addition to the rest of the content types. It's quite a big project but maybe a company that's using captivate heavily and is interested in moving towards open source would invest in its development.

Could I ask which other Captivate content types you would like to see in H5P?

Thanks,

Tim

Hi Tim,

Yes, a time sequenced presentation that could call up any of the other content types would be very powerful. I cannot immediately think of other functionality in Captivate that would be appropriate in H5P, but I need to better understand the scope of H5P to do the gap analysis. Will get back on that one!

The request has hitted the nail !
I'm looking forward to the day we do not need a huge sized video, just to make a nice presenation with 10 timed slides and their elements, and a lot to be explained by a good audio voiceover. It is the dream!
It is like reducing the work we do with camtasia to a manageable content.

Thank you

Hi,

This sounds like a good idea, and it would be good to get more detailed explanations on how such a content type should behave. Here are some questions to think about:

  • Should it be possible to create it without adding audio?
  • Should the content type display a "slider" showing the progress of the audio?
  • Should the end user be able to "pause" the progress (we should facilitate different "reading speeds")
  • Should the end user be able to navigate freely (like in Interactive Video)
  • Should it be slides, or like in Interactive Video, where each interaction/element is placed freely both in terms of position/size and time.
  • Should there be some kind of summary at the end?

Hi,

I can only really speak to what process is used in Captivate, but I have used other similar software in the past, so the process is pretty standard. It is, as you suggest, like an interactive video, with each 'track' superimposed on a timeline and able to be started/stopped, faded in/out etc at a time defined by the author. There is one track for each 'sprite' or element and one or more for audio, and any other effects you might want to superimpose. Each element can have its varios properties varied over time also, so a square could slowly change to a rectangle by linking the dimensions to time.

Conceptually I see this as straightforward, by simply tying the visibility and other properties of each H5P object property to a time, perhaps through a function whose parameters could be varied to give a linear or other type of relationship. Other required functions of this presentation type would be similar to the usual video player, with fast forward/rewind etc

Thank you for your inputs :)

Should it be possible to create it without adding audio?

One of the great advantages of a timed presentation, on my view of it,  would be using it when a video would be unnecessary, an overkill, and an audio track would sync with the visual timed presentation. The presentation itself could run on an empty timeline and media inserted on a timed spot.

Should the content type display a "slider" showing the progress of the audio?

Yes.

Should the end user be able to "pause" the progress (we should facilitate different "reading speeds")

We all have "interruptions" ! PAUSE

Should the end user be able to navigate freely (like in Interactive Video)

Yes "freedom of navigation"!

Should it be slides, or like in Interactive Video, where each interaction/element is placed freely both in terms of position/size and time.

Elements positioned in time.

Should there be some kind of summary at the end?

Yes, and the question here, is the summary timed or un-timed?

Thanks for your feedback!

Just thought to enquire if there is any update to this initiative to implement editable tracks, including audio for voice-over? Conceptually it seems to be a straightforward addition to the current 'Presentation' widget?

Hi peterk,

Although this is great idea there is not much traction on it in the community and no one has picked up the project.

This would be very beneficial.
