Submit screen and summary task in interactive video

Hi,

I am using H5P interactive video in Moodle. There appears to be a couple of problems with submit screens and summary tasks. In all of these scenarios, I have a submit screen placed at the end of the video.

  1. I have a video with no other interactive elements except the summary task. The submit screen does not appear to the user: there is neither the star icon by the video timeline nor does the popup show at the end.
  2. I have a video with a summary task and other elements. The submit screen appears at the end, covering the icon that launches the summary task so that unless a student is careful, they may miss doing the summary task.

The point 1 look like a bug to me. The point 2 is less a bug than an unintended outcome of existing features. Ideally, I would like the video to play to the end and the summary task to be visible when the video stops. After the student has completed the summary task, the submit screen would popup automatically.

The workaround to solve both these issues would be to replace summary tasks with single choice question sets that appear one second before the end of the video and pause the video. But this is suboptimal because 1) playing the video for a second to get to the submit screen is bad for usability 2) the text only summary task editor is really nice feature and it cannot be used for the single choice sets and 3) I have a lot of H5Ps that would need to be manually modified.

Hi Mikko,

Thank you for reporting these.

1. The Summary Screen is not intended as "graded" activity and does not generate xAPI statements. Having said this it does not trigger the Submit screen to pop-up since there are no grades that are going to be sent to the Gradebook.

2. Do you happen to have a sample content that shows this issue?

Thanks for the quick response.

1. I assume that by "The Summary Screen" you are referring to the summary task at the end of the video. The summary task does send data to Moodle gradebook. For example, if I have a video with only a summary task, and students answer that task before allowing the video to play to the end, at the end of the video the points from the summary task are sent to the Moodle gradebook. The submit screen is not shown, but the grades are sent when the video completes. If the student answers the summary task after the video has completed, they will need to rewind the video a couple of seconds and allow it to complete playing again to send the scores.

2. Here is a demo https://mycourses.aalto.fi/mod/hvp/view.php?id=392071 Answer the first question and then allow the video to play to the end. It is very easy to miss the summary task.

Hi Mikko,

You are correct on both points.

For the issue with the summary screen being missed I would suggest for now to set it a bit earlier. I will also move this post to the Feature Request forum with 2 suggestions.

1. Include the summary task as a trigger for the submit screen.

2. Add an option in the summary task to pause the video or if a summary task is created use it as a "gatekeeper' before the submit screen pops up.

Please let me what your thoughts on my suggestions.

Hi,

The firt suggestion is good as it is. In the second one, I do not see the need to pause the video. For me, the point of the summary task is that it is something that can be done when the video ends. If I wanted the video to pause before ending, I could just use the normal single choice set task. Requiring that the summary task is completed before the submit screen shows is a good idea.

Thanks Mikko, I have moved the post to the Feature Request forum.

Hi there,

I hope someone can help me with to solve the problem. I created a task with interactive video and added a summary task (5 questions). So after students have watched the video and done the short test, they see their score, for example 3 out 5. But when I check the grades section, I see no marks at all. Does anyone know what the problem is?
