Text hotspots

Suggestion from Jesus:

Hi there, I was wondering if it would be possible to have a tool to create "text hotspots", same as "image hotspots", this would be to have extra information linked to certain words, and I think it could be pretty useful when learning/teaching foreign languages, for exemple: some difficult words could be translated, or even better have an image that shows the meaning. Is there a way to do this with the tools that H5P proposes right now? If not would it be possible to create something like this? Any way, congratulations for your work, it's just amazing!!!

It happened that I needed the same feature you requested and I found a way through. I created a corrected exercice (part of the remedial work) made a screenshot of it and created an image hotspot , that is a paragraph with extra  information about students' mistakes and suggestions of some remedial work. https://h5p.org/node/37721/ I hope it is helpful for you.  It would be helpful if someone creates "text hotspots" . :)

thanks for the hint, and I agree with you, couldn't someone create a "text hotspot", it seems like everyone is interested on the image hotspots and no one on the text hotspots, is it more complicated?

It should be pretty simple to implement something like this. It's just that someone needs to invest the time.

I'm impressed by the ingenuity of your solution :) And I too, hope for a real text hotspots!

I think the requested new feature would be equivalent to what is known as "glossary" in other software. For instance the Moodle glossary or the WordPress CM Tooltip Glossary. This would be something quite different from the current "Image hotspots" activity.

This new feature could use the "Tip" tooltip feature already existing in some H5P activities. I have made up a little mock-up using the Drag & Drop activity with 3 drop zones, one Tip and no draggagles.

It shouldn't be difficult to implement something like this. As you say, a lot of the pieces are already available, it just needs to be assembled.

In teaching second language, the opportunity of having a glossary, or at least a way to "enrich" words (or even small chunks), could be remarkable.

There's another discussion where the question was somewhat settled: https://h5p.org/node/17027. I'm using CM Tooltips Glossary too but, as Falcon there stated, "H5P only want to be about the content itself and not the context around the content".

Moreover, what I do with CMTG affects the posts but does not "penetrate" into the H5P contents. And this is a double problem:

  • it's (almost) no use having "highlighted" glossary terms all over the site (it could also be disturbing, annoying!);
  • it's a pain not having glossarized terms into interactive contents - that's where I wanted them to be.

And more: I'm teaching second language, not writing any dictionary. So I'm not interested in general definitions of words. First of all, I want (and my students need) to make clear what that particular word means in that particular context. Indeed, words gain meaning from the context they occur in, and the more you generalize its definition (to apply it to the whole "universe"), the more you get away from what your students have under their eyes.

So yes, a way to "enrich" (even small chunks of) words could be noteworthy. The "textual hotspot" seems to me a suggestive idea, even though I think I prefer the tooltip feature. The ability of creating/inserting a single glossary entry just where I need it - and not everywhere else - could make a difference.

The creation of a deposit where all glossary entries are stored (and retrieved and linked to their "native" proposition) could be an interesting matter. But I'm afraid this is something different, more complicate and maybe out of H5P intrinsic logic and perspective. Such "repo/glossary" should be cross-contents, transversal to and independent from  every single interactive contents (in my WP or Drupal site I could have dozens of H5P contents and how about managing a "single glossary unit" whose entries are distributed throughout all of those contents?).

At the end of the day, I think that an non-structured solution could be fair enough. This reminds me to the Fill in the Blanks example: *browser/web-browser:Something you use every day*.

So, as a non coder I find myself dreaming of a combination like */ [glossary definition] /* that might work like in the D&D example here above.

Hi akud!

Actually, I don't think it would be too complicated to add this to H5P from a technical point of view (unless you want to share the glossary information with a content type), but it should indeed be set up "outside" of content types. I cannot judge the usability though.

Best,
Oliver

I very much liked your description of the ideal glossary(ies) and interaction with h5p. What do you use on WP ? I'm on Moodle as well and the glossary is used in several gamification plugins. Does Drupal work the same way?

I would love to see done sub-settings in h5p where glossaries, question banks and image locations could be switched off as the teacher/designer creates the learner experience.

This is what I have in WP, but as I said I works out of interactive contents.

I've seen the Moodle's glossary and have no idea of something equivalent in Drupal (but I guess there's one).

Thanks!

Thanks.

Hello,

First of all a big thank you for H5P which is really a fabulous tool for teachers!

Looking for a solution to integrate information bubble I came across this post. French, I also teach a second language (Spanish) and I have the same concerns as you. I do not need a glossary but to be able to put either translations or synononyms in the second language.

I use WordPress and, when I do not need H5P, I use the great plugin Easy Footnotes that allows you to have tooltips and, if I want it, footnotes. See picture.

Would it be possible to run this plugin under H5P or adapt it?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

Hi Steph!

I extend the question to the H5P community. The core team will probably not have the time to implement such a feature any time soon, but you can of course pool resources any time to make it happen.

Best,
Oliver
